Food editor Hilary Biller and food expert Jenny Kay bought the mince pies from five supermarkets — Checkers, Food Lover’s Market, Pick n Pay, Spar and Woolworths. All five stores carry classic mince pies, with some offering twists on the classic.
For a fair judging, the classic pies were presented to the panel at room temperature in a blind tasting — which means that, stripped of their packaging, the pies were numbered and presented to the judges, who rated them on a score sheet. The mince pies were judged on appearance, aroma, pastry and filling. Each category was given a score out of 10, making a total out of 40.
We were looking for a mince pie that said Christmas in a mouthful — it had to have the look of a typical mince pie with that familiar festive aroma, a buttery pastry, a generous filling of identifiable fruit-mince ingredients, and leave you with that feeling you could easily go for a second helping, it was that good.
I don't understand people who enjoy mince pies😖
