Mabuza expanded on an announcement he made last month about Eskom’s takeover of electricity distribution in the Maluti-a-Phofung local municipality in the Free State, saying this will now be the model used in all municipalities that were struggling with Eskom debt.
The municipality has been experiencing inconsistent supplies of water and electricity. It owes Eskom R5bn. “In this case, Eskom is going to bring the necessary skills that will help maintain the infrastructure that brings the electricity, meaning the people. And as much as Eskom will bring outside people, these people are going to train the municipal employees that will remain to maintain the system,” he said.
He said in the process, the power utility would probably help to maintain infrastructure in struggling municipalities but also try to capacitate workers. He said while some municipalities were not able to collect enough revenue to be able to discharge their functions, others like Maluti-a-Phofung, had workers who worked for the municipality and for government, and earned salaries, but were not paying for services.
Over 90% of those are ANC run municipalities.
Its going to be interesting?!🙄🙄
That was long overdue
I struggle to see the importance of citypower, they should do the same in COJ too
I feel something sinister coming up.
Guess what. New meter boxes to be installed. And who gets the tender to install them.? Off course my brother in looting. COMRADES!!!! Watch this space
These morons can’t run a piss in a brewery, what the f^ck was Eskom thinking when ppl appointed only on political merit, no educational qualifications r meant to run these municipalities
Doesn't solve the problem of incompetent officials sitting in municipal offices and getting paid every month.
What a senseless load of stupidity and poor journalism....Isn't this always supposed to have been ESKOM's function? What is this guy saying really? . So----You telling us that ESKOM is gonna take over doing do what they have been mandated and supposed to do?
We have a deputy president?
Makes sense cut out the middle man.
Why not in all municipalities. This middleman thing is costing us so much .
