Energy crisis: Another R33-billion needed to complete Medupi and Kusile: President Cyril Ramaphosa tells parliament that South Africa’s calamitous energy crisis was not wilfully brought on by any individual in government

South Africa Headlines News

South Africa Latest News, South Africa Headlines

Ramaphosa answered questions before parliament on Thursday, during which he also said that South Africa’s energy crisis — which he called a “calamity of enormous proportions” — had not been wilfully brought on by any individual in government.

Construction on the two power stations began in 2007 and by 2019 their cost had ballooned by more than R300-billion — reaching R145-billion for Medupi and R161.4-billion for Kusile. “I am confident in finishing these units and finishing them in the budgeted amounts that we have put out,” he said. Last year, Eskom announced that Medupi, which is the fourth-largest, coal-fired power station in the world, had achieved commercial operation. However, in August 2021, Medupi’s unit four generator exploded, resulting in massive damage, exorbitant costs and a reduction in generation capacity. Repairs are expected to be completed by August 2024.

“It is something that we have been suffering from, because the design defects have actually contributed to a large extent to the load-shedding that we are currently having.”

According to our President's reasoning Eskom's failure is an act of God.

they should forget about spending any more on those power plants and invest it in solar and wind for the masses

OUTASA Absolving his mate in government is sickening

No surprise, we are heading to 2024 elections. Strategic people will be placed at Eskom to loot that money to support December conference & 2024 election campaigns. To our knowledge those power stations have long been completed. Hope we won't have random heists soon. Just saying.

Why not use some of the billions of dollars he has Ramaphosa to help eskom maybe the public protector my look the other way

What's ironic is many of the anti-Cyril replies are from ANC-voters who have voted us into this mess. Then they will vote for whoever comes next in the hope something will change. Nothing will change while ANC is in power

Didn’t they say mudupi wa khona was finished? Now what is happening kanti

expropriation without compensation enca

To complete 🤔🤔

He's correct. It wasn't a single effort. All of the cANCerous scum took part in the looting frenzy that has crippled this once proud nation.

Obviously not an individual, his collective cabinet.

Former Mayor of Lephalale needs to be investigated for the collapse of Medupi, it used to be the cash cow of the comrades.

CyrilRamaphosa was shocked!!

hopefully this time, they will build a shelter with that money so that the coal doesnt get wet everytime it rains, and as a result...we have to have more load shedding.

These people remind of the guy who's stands at the ATM, drawing his money, and then he waits....😂Hoping the Machine issues more, even though, its only gives what he puts in

What exactly are they really build in that place🤯

Kusile and Modupi are our own version of the tower of BABEL,even the confusion has already started.

Dont spend any more money there...

Everything is “in process.” Things are “improving.” He did not know. “Lo and behold.” There is a power crisis that has nuked this economy and we've spent nearly R400bn on two plants that are not working. But all we get are deflections and excuses.

They are liars!!!!!!

They are liars!!!!!!

We all know the real reason they 'need' 33 billion

I think the time has come for the taxpayer, the ones paying the politicians’ salaries, to grow a spine and deprive these clowns from spending money?

🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

SaaymanBarry Don’t make me laugh Cyril. How do you let these ridiculous comments come out your mouth?

But Cyril said he needed R 19 Billion yesterday to complete. Or angizwanga kahle. Ayadla ama comrade...kumnandi ekhaya iDSTV

Is this ANC-speak for 'Cadre pockets need topping-up?'

MYANC INCOMPETENCE, MISMANANAGMENT, CADRE DEPLOYMENT, TRANSFORMATION QUOTAS AND CORRUPTION SOLEY TO BLAME FOR CURRENT CRISIS !! THIS PROBLEM DIDNT START IN 2017 OR WHEN DE RUYTER WAS APPOINTED. IT STARTED IN 1994.

ANC needs to fill their coffers for vote buying in 2024

Another fairy tale

'South Africa’s calamitous energy crisis was not wilfully brought on by any individual in government...' Now why would CR say that?

This Ramaphosa guy is really something else 🤦🏾‍♂️

Grand scale looting

WTF, this oke is smoking his socks. We are here BECAUSE OF GOVERMENT CORRUPTTION and incompetence.

But sure was brought on by the anc

Someone please tell me why politicians are against the idea of selling eskom?

Inganekwane.

VoetsekANC

This Medupi and Kusile is turning out to be a bottomless pit‼🤬🤬🤬😡Until when are we going to keep throwing money at the problem without getting to the bottom of where the money went and criminals facing consequences? Y does the MYANC think tax payer money is infinite?

No! It was a team effort.

Well yeah, not one of them. ALL OF THEM!

For R33-Billion, we can install 3 million solar geysers (at R10k each). A solar geyser saves 3kW electricity. 3m saves 9GW, if they all drawing power simultaneously. Let's say 1/10 on at once. They'd save 900MW. And at NO FUEL COST! AntonEberhard chrisyelland

He's right. The whole happy lot of MYANC thieves must be blamed. VoetsekANC

If you do not know what you are doing? Can you be blamed for what is going wrong?

..... But a collective opportunity to loot.

OUTASA It most certainly was willful! The corruption of the ANC is a willful act!

ferialhaffajee And there are people who are shouting that we should give the same fools the oppotunity to build a nuclear station, imagine 🙄. 😂😂😂🤣😂🤣

Cadre deployment is wilfull. You force an incompetent person into a position where they WILL destroy lives and value. voetsekANC

Just plain old incompetence then? Oh ok...

Yeah it was the whole bang lot of them that brought on the crisis. SouthAfrica

Let's cut thru the BS. The ANC interference at Eskom together with their stupid policies is the root cause of all the problems there

Black leaders in post Madiba have failed...from Municipal to national levels, it has been looting spree and poor leadership from the majority party, ANC...It's time to say Goodbye, Andrea Boceli song

South African Airways is dead, and replaced by another technically bankrupt airline...Eskom is in ICU, and Pravin, a Chemist is free to serve as a Minister...Ramaphosa is failure and big shame to South Africa.

Any sensible leader would have foreseen the crisis five years ago bearing in a mind almost a decade of mismanagement and corruption at Eskom under JZ...Ramaphosa didn't see that coming and he is a failure just like Zuma and ANC

Looting max voetsekanc

🤣🤣🤣

OUTASA Turns out the collapse of Eskom was an unfortunate accident.

OUTASA He is right it was not caused by one single person all ANC politicians and their buddies went on a feeding frenzy, like sharks, when they decided to use ESKOM as a private self enriching piggy bank.

OUTASA F*ck me...it's amazing how the ANC's worthless pride forces it to keep throwing good money at 2 abortive monstrocities that are beyond repair. But hey, it's taxpayer money, so the African National Curse (ANC) is unconcerned at the utter waste...

Really? With the ANC's track record in corruption and theft, that is probably not true.

It's a lie
