Year in and year out, we listen in shock as the police minister and his minions bombard us with the latest crime statistics, a grisly catalogue of murders, mutilations and horrific rapes.But, in a day or two, the shock and horror will have receded into the background, and we will have returned to being our old violent selves – shrugging off the horrific crime figures as if they were an inevitability.
South Africa has one of the highest cases of rape and related instances of violence against women and children in the world. Psychologists and analysts have over the years tried to explain our predilection for violence as a legacy from colonialism and apartheid – systems that were driven by violence.While it might be true that we are by-products of these systems, we cannot throw our hands up in the air in defeat as if nothing can be done to change this reality.
As we begin our annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, let us rededicate ourselves to intensifying our fight against violence, as it touches the most vulnerable members of our society – women and children.Writing songs and performing plays about this campaign is a good start, but it should not end there. Let us take constructive steps towards pushing back the boundaries of violence.
