A massive fire that began on Sunday in Cape Town has spread overnight due to strong winds, forcing residents to evacuate their homes.
Western Cape fire crews on high alert for Table Mountain flare-upsFire Fighters in Cape Town remain on high alert on Monday evening as fears of possible flare-ups of the devastating wildfire grow.The Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) said firefighters will be on standby throughout the night in case of any eventuality.
"We would like to clarify that the fire is contained, but we are not out of the woods yet. We are dealing with severe winds that could ignite the flames. That’s why our crews must stand by for anything," TMNP fire manager Philip Prins said.Prins added that although some of the vegetation fire has been extinguished, the roots of the vegetation still remains a high risk as it could ignite and cause flare-ups.

Many of the firefighters risking their lives to bring Cape Town's devastating Table Mountain fire under control are doing so while in a protracted dispute over their shifts, and are worried about being fired.According to the South African Municipal Worker's Union (Samwu) 525 firefighters could be fired for embarking on an unlawful strike in 2019.

Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) Patricia de Lille has confirmed that the Cape Town fire destroyed a minister's home."Since Sunday morning, 18 April, we have all watched with horror the very devastating impact of the fires on Table Mountain.
"Unfortunately, we can report that one Minister's Cape Town residence in Newlands (owned by DPWI) was completely destroyed by the fire on Sunday afternoon. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and no one was in the property at the time," De Lille said in a statement on Monday. headtopics.com
