DA FEDERAL CONGRESS South Africa’s slickest political show goes virtual in impressive style By Rebecca Davis becsplanb

What has to be sacrificed to ensure such well-oiled proceedings? Some elements of the democratic process, detractors would suggest. When it came to debating amendments to the DA constitution, only delegates previously noted down as speakers could make verbal contributions. For the rest, the chat function on Zoom had to suffice.

“No other party has attempted anything as big or ambitious as this, but then there is no party quite like the DA,” pronounced presiding officer Desiree van der Walt. Spokesperson Malatsi denied that delegates were slow to find their feet with the voting system, suggesting that the amendments had not been passed because delegates were satisfied with the status quo.

Another amendment dismissed by delegates aimed to change the party constitution to ensure that the post of federal council chair – currently held by Zille – be voted on by the entire congress rather than simply the federal council chair members. Supporters of this change argued that the position was too important to entrust to such a small group of voters, since the federal council chair plays a significant role in running day-to-day operations of the party.

“I think in the past we elected a person and when that person gets burnt out or when that person leaves or when that person does something that brings the party into disrepute, we all end up scrambling around like headless chickens without having an immediate person who can step into the role even if it’s for the interim,” Ntuli said.
