Western Cape health authorities believe the new variant could be responsible for the slight rise in cases witnessed over the past week.

Infectious diseases expert Mary-Ann Davies said scientists now have to work as quickly as possible to determine the full impact of the variant.“All our labs that are using the assay have identified at least some cases of the S-gene target failure, I think it’s reasonable to say that the increase in cases we have seen here is probably related to the presence of the variant,” Davies said.
