Businesses with illegal electricity connections do not only risk being disconnected but will face penalties as high as R1 million, while residents could pay as much as R22 000 before being reconnected, City Power has said.
He added that “at least 30 formal houses were cut off for selling electricity illegally to the settlement, which is not only a crime but is against the by-laws”. “I study online and need to use electricity throughout the day. When the transformer is overloaded the electricity goes off. How do you study when you don’t have electricity?” she said.
“We told them that if something was not done, we would continue with our protest anyway because we've had enough. I’m very excited. We’ve been fighting for this for a long time,” she said.
Long overdue
GovernmentZA disconnected
oh good luck with that.
I say it's a DIY.
Constant maintenance creates opportunity for innovation, like maybe introducing new security measures to protect their infrastructure, instead of burdening community members with the responsibility of reporting & run the risk of being victimized by these criminals.
Part of the problem with illegal connections does not only lie with criminals illegally connecting electricity or community members who do not report but also Eskom's failure to maintain & service its infrastructure. Technicians can't only be seen on site when these a problem.
