The Reds take a six-point lead into the game, but will draw little comfort from the knowledge that, even in the worst-case scenario, they will still be three points ahead.

Barring any seismic shifts, Liverpool and Manchester City will – as they did last season – be the last ones standing when the battle for the Premier League title enters its final stage next year.

Liverpool learnt the hard way last season that no lead is big enough if you have another giant of English football breathing down your neck. Going into the game at the Etihad last season, the visitors had a seven-point lead, which was cut down to four at the end of the 90 minutes. The rest is, as they say, history.

However, Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp was dismissive of speculation that the Brazilian would not play today. But Guardiola will be without injured players Leroy Sané and Aymeric Laporte, who have been out of action for a while. Oleksandr Zinchenko is expected to return next month. Rodri and David Silva will also most likely be unavailable.
