Burkina Faso crowd celebrates West Africa's latest coup

More than 1,000 people gathered in Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou on Tuesday in support of a military coup that a day earlier ousted President Roch Kabore, dissolved the government and suspended the constitution.

The fifth coup in west and Central Africa this decade comes amid an increasingly bloody Islamist insurgency that has killed thousands and displaced millions across the Sahel region, eroding faith in democratic leaders to combat the problem.Africa Cup of Nations Last 16 Result: Burkina Faso 1-1 Gabon (Burkina Faso won 7-6 on penalties) Date: Venue: Stade Omnisport de Limbe The Stallions made three changes to the side that was held by Ethiopia, as they recalled goalkeeper Herve Koffi, Soumaila Ouattara and Dango Ouattara, with Aston Villa attacker Bertrand Traore leading the line, while Gabon were without Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was withdrawn due to health reasons.23 January 2022 - 22:16 Mark Gleson Burkina Faso's Ismahila Ouedraogo celebrate after scoring the winning penalty against Gabon at Limbe Omnisport Stadium in Limbe, Cameroon, January 23 2022.Ismahila Ouedraogo netted the decisive kick to ensure they are the first side into the last eight after an incident-packed and energy sapping clash.

On Monday, soldiers announced they had overthrown Kabore, who came to power in 2015, a move condemned internationally but welcomed by some at home tired of widespread insecurity, alleged corruption and deep poverty. The putschists, called the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration (MPSR), presented Kabore with a handwritten resignation letter on Monday, which he signed, according to numerous sources who shared the letter with Reuters and verified its authenticity. However, Traore eventually broke the deadlock for Kamou Malo's charges just before the half-hour mark, after curling home a low strike that went in off the post after a through ball by Dango Ouattara.“In the interests of the nation, following events that took place since yesterday, I have decided to resign from my role as president of Burkina Faso,” said the letter. After Burkina Faso skipper Bertrand Traore scored early, 10-man Gabon took the match into extra time following a dramatic last-minute equaliser. An MPSR statement read on television said it was reopening borders a day after closing them. The Brazilians made a double change just after the half-time break, as Axel Meye replaced Jim Allevinah for fresh legs upfront and Denis Bouanga came on Anthony Oyono for the same reason in midfield.Kabore's whereabouts were unknown on Tuesday.

The MPSR has said he was detained at a secure location.Despite the numerical disadvantage, Gabon got the equaliser in stoppage time thanks to Adama Guira, who headed a corner into his own net at the back post, sending the clash to extra-time.The first goal came after Traore ran onto a defence-splitting pass from teenager Dango Ouattara to hit home with a left footed effort from outside the penalty area in the 28th minute, as he beat the Gabon defence and the onrushing goalkeeper, with his effort sneaking in off the post.Vehicles belonging to the presidential fleet were seen riddled with bullets near Kabore's residence the day before.France's President Emmanuel Macron said the situation had appeared calm in the last few hours and that he had been informed Kabore was “in good health” and not being threatened.Ismahila Ouedraogo had a chance to snatch the winner five minutes before time with a volley in the box that was saved by Amonome as the sides went to penalty shoot-out.The US, the United Nations, regional political bloc ECOWAS and the G5 group of Sahel nations all condemned the coup.Traore was continually threatening on the counter attack and Ouattara also had chances on the break as Gabon were caught often as they tried to sweep forward in searching of an equaliser.ECOWAS said in a statement on Tuesday that Kabore was forced to resign under “threat, intimidation and pressure” from the military, and it will hold an emergency summit to discuss a response in the coming days. Here are the 10 highest-ranked African nations in FIFA's latest rankings: Share.

ECOWAS has already slapped broad sanctions on neighbouring Mali where there have been two military coups since August 2020.A military-led interim government said this month that it planned to hold on to power until December 2025 — nearly four years after it initially agreed to hold democratic elections — prompting ECOWAS to close borders with Mali and cut it off from financial markets.Gabonese captain Bruno Ecuele Manga struck with a late equaliser, timing his run perfectly into the penalty area to power his header home and rescue his side from imminent defeat.Armies have also staged coups in Guinea and Chad in the last year, raising worries about a return to the latter stages of the last century when frequent putches across west and Central Africa saw the region dubbed “The Coup Belt”..
