Pretoria - Statistics South Africa's latest report, released on Thursday, confirms glaring inequalities in South African society with black citizens bearing the brunt of record levels of unemployment, Statistician General Risenga Maluleke said.
Maluleke released the report, titled "Inequality Trends in South Africa - a multidimensional diagnostic of inequality" in Pretoria. "Let us look at the labour market inequality ... in terms of that, black Africans have the highest unemployment rate which is more or less four times higher than that of the white population group. At the top [on a StatsSA graph] in 2017 it was sitting at 31 percent unemployment rate for black Africans, for Coloureds it was at 23, 5 percent, at 11,6 for the Indian/Asians, and for the whites unemployment was sitting at 6, 7 percent," he told a media briefing.
"As we can see coming out of 2011, prior to that in about 2008 the unemployment rate for whites in South Africa was sitting at about five percent which generally would have meant, in international standards, that whites were not necessarily unemployed at the time." He as recent studies show that "unemployment is creeping in amongst the white population group, albeit at a lower rate compared to the other population groups in the country".
