“Now, as we enter the next phase of our struggle against the coronavirus, it is once again your actions as citizens that will determine the fate of our nation”. — President Cyril Ramaphosa

Although some of the restrictions would ease and some sectors would open, Ramaphosa said high-risk economic activities such as bars, restaurants and taverns would remain closed except for delivery.

Although not budging on tobacco sales, Ramaphosa announced that the sale of alcohol would be permitted “for consumption at home” under level three.Ramaphosa said the lockdown had played its part and it was time to pass the baton to citizens, who now hold the responsibility of ensuring that the good work done by the early response was not undone.

He added that “now, as we enter the next phase of our struggle against the coronavirus, it is once again your actions as citizens that will determine the fate of our nation”. “We appreciate the diverse and sometimes challenging views of the scientists and health professionals in our country, which stimulate public debate and enrich our response.”

While announcing the easing of restrictions, Ramaphosa said he was expecting a surge in the numbers of infected citizens.
