The Fair Trade Independent Tobacco Association (Fita) urged the government to reconsider the nationwide ban on the sale of cigarettes.

The government stands to lose more than R1 billion a month if the ban on the sale of cigarettes remains in place, according to an industry body, which also warned the ban could lead to people travelling inter-provincially to buy and smuggle cigarettes, bypassing lockdown regulations.

He said other provincial governments and national government should lift the ban because cigarettes had not been banned in other countries under lockdown due to the coronavirus. The organisation added that the sale of cigarettes was continuing through illegal channels and the profits obtained were lost to the economy because taxes were not being collected by the South African Revenue Service and other tax authorities.

Take it of Cele budget, no loss really it’s not like they use their budget to fight crime anyway, they money can be better spent on other things. Better yet dock his pay.

But healthwise there will be a great benefit

Ruraltarain And how much is the ban on manufacturing, alcohol sales, travel, etc costing SA? Smokers and their privilege must sit down like everyone

Thats ridiculous🤬

Cryosphear i Wonder how many other countries have done this

I miss my cigarettes and beer

PresidencyZA look at this.

Sanebutnot Oh they wil get the money one or the other way come hell or high water.

But really cigarettes are essential for what except all the cancers they are causing.

ChristoConradi1 Like SA Government is not short on money as it is... Nice one ANC, now that tax money is going to the black market instead 👍

And Liquor sales.. Probably more...

Lol so what they must unban alcohol

Add to that alcohol and fuel levy and you get staggering amounts. Government will be completely and utterly bankrupt after this.

But why?

Motsepe already closed that gap

Loss for the government, gain for some INDIVIDUALS?

If the ban saves lives, so be it.

Death or Profit? lockDownSouthAfrica

cci_network Idea of banning sales on cigarrete is very bad. Sharing on smoking is most of the bad habits on this period but we as smokers dont have a choice but to risk and share cigarretes. No where else to get ur own cigarrete and cravings are very high. Reconsider the sales

We don't care!!!Ban!ban!ban!

Rupert the president of South Africa has spoken🙄

Smart move, neh......

We are Led.

Human lives are worth more than one billion rands. Cigarettes are not a necessity but a detriment to our health particularly in this pandemic.

maDube_ People are still buying them from the black market. Including alcohol. This lockdown noone was thinking at all😮😮😮

Same with all other things forbidden at this stage! Alcohol, SMMEs, restaurants, milk & potato producers, vehicle retailers/ detailers etc Cigarette isn't an essential product & many smokers, nevertheless, are selfish buggers making us sick smoking near entrances & they litter

Nevermind the financial gains or losses, what are the reasons behind the cigarettes ban on the current pandemic perspectiveThat's the bone of contention herein

Lobbying...

I'm sure us alcohol drinkers its 20bn

Add Booze to that more like R2,5 Billion a month Viava ANC , Tinpotdictaor

vusiking So you mean goverment sell cigarette?!!!!🤔

Ucken fidiots

VusiSambo Stupid

This Citizen News is anti black. Its a racist stokvel. If you are black never take anything they say seriously

So talk about shooting themselves in the foot, this time it's in the heart MaxduPreez Martin_Welz

I doubt Cele knows that.the billion rand lost every month will fall straight into pockets of Mazzotti's&Zimbabwe

What about illicit trade, ain't costing government?

People who don't smoke are lucky, but don't judge smokers, if we want to smoke let us smoke, we are all going to die one day whether we smoke or not during such stressful times the government is taking away stress relievers, it's like they want to kill us if the virus dont 🤔

The way white people enjoying to fool black people, they fight for their addiction using government. When lock down starts we were advised is time to compromise. We expect the same from smokers.

All those taxes from booze, cigarettes and petrol they are not getting... Shem

Banning cigarette sales was wrong. Nevermind all the blah, blah, blahs.

Health is more important than money

Mnr_DJ aww.. well... they zigged when they should have zagged hey... they just cannot make a decent decision can they?

Are we all surprised

Covid19 vs. Cigarettes :in reality, what do cigarettes have to do with 'coronavirus'? I misunderstand

Family violence is high during this period. We can't take are why the fact that many alcohol drinkers where not ready to be rehabilitated so quick. If you also adding cigarette I don't know

What else? Lousy headline. Try lockdown to cost government.... R a month.
