“I am who I am and I can’t and won’t deny where I come from.”

Former Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality mayor Athol Trollip has come under fire for his recent social media post, calling for government to celebrate the “important anniversary” of settlers' arrival in SA.

Trollip, who was commenting on the 200th anniversary of the arrival of 1820 settlers in Port Elizabeth, said he was a proud descendant of the settlers and the legacy their descendants have contributed to the country. I wonder whether this important anniversary will celebrated or derided by our Government? I’m a proud descendant of the 1820 settlers and the legacy that their descendants have contributed to our country. History is history, it is what it is.

Do you know what the settlers did when they sat foot here

Stay proud. They built a mighty country. Reverse the roles and there would only be nomadic tribes still.

I think Trollip is irked by the attention Zille gets from her racist diatribe. He wants to galvanise attention for himself by evoking racial tensions amongst South Africans. And, from the tweets here, it does look like he's succeeding to, at least, light the racial tension fuse.

He must not call on our government to celebrate the arrival of whites; that’s disgusting. How can we celebrate the arrival of our tormentors; the land grabbers and our oppressors who destroyed our humanity. How can we celebrate such a humiliation? Whites are asking for too much

Most settlers were given a farm, sack of seeds, few chickens, sheep, milk cow and a waggon and oxen and were told to get on with it. And they did. Today the ANC only give you a farm and thats probably why the ANC farmers fail.

How can an African government celebrate colonialism? That would be an insult to those who had to be exterminated to make way for your ancestors.

16 may 1820, is when my ancestors came. We have been here 200 years.
