THABISO MAHLAPE | Appeasing the dead to make your living family happy

We start at a cemetery near Lebowakgomo, referred to as GaLedwaba, where my eldest aunt was laid to rest. We gather around the gravesite and kneel.

I haven't knelt in a long time; I am too fat to be kneeling at gravesites, besides there are other types of kneeling I rather prefer. My eldest uncle, who is the family patriarch, leads us in the ritual of greeting the departed, telling them we have remembered them yet again this year, and that we have come to show our love.We then proceed to Moletlane, Zebediela, where our roots lie, our ancestoral home as I like to call it.

OP-ED: Writing the 2019 Elections: Apartheid is dead, long live capitalismThe Capitalist Party wants to establish a conservative and distinctly illiberal society. The Socialist Revolutionary Workers Party is opposed to capitalism, and will fight for a distinctly illiberal South Africa. They form the book-ends of the political spectrum that place capitalism at the centre of everything they do. In the meantime, everyone else seems to be whirling devilishly to recitations and incantations of race, identity, ethnicity and other imaginaries. Apartheid is alive

WATCH LIVE: Nelson Mandela Foundation makes case for banning old SA flagThe Equality Court is hearing arguments on Monday morning on why the Nelson Mandela Foundation wants the old apartheid-era flag banned and decalred hate speech. A flag can't speak, so it can't possibly be 'hate-speech'. Dont ban the flag. We as black people must be reminded that the struggle is not over. We're still hated & not recognised in our own country. This rainbow nation nonsense is a big lie. We need not to beg people to love us but challenge ourselves to love each other. Let’s not forget what this flag represents to the majority of South Africans.

A Personal Reflection: Happy Freedom Day, Portugal, 45 years after the Carnation RevolutionHow can you not love the Portuguese Carnation Revolution? It happened on 25 April 1974, 20 minutes after midnight. A military coup, not a shot fired, instead music and flowers, specifically red carnations. The “gentle revolution” had massive repercussions as the new leftist-led government began radically to transform the country’s social system, the economy as well as its role in Africa.
