South Africans rushing to complete Sunday lunch before loadshedding hits can now breathe a sigh of relief. Eskom recently announced loadshedding would been suspended on Sunday, 7 August, due to “improved generation capacity and the lower weekend demand.”
Loadshedding was implemented on 3 August due to a delay in returning various generation units back to service, including units at Arnot, Koeberg. However, while South Africans may have the opportunity to enjoy a loadshedding-free Sunday, the power utility warned that the national grid was still vulnerable.
“While we are able to suspend the loadshedding at this point, it is important to note that the generation system is still vulnerable to breakdowns and loadshedding may be required. We therefore urge all South Africans to continue using electricity sparingly, especially during these uncertain times on power systems,”Eskom currently has 4116MW on planned maintenance and another 12 437MW of capacity available due to breakdowns.
