Have you ever had a request from a family member who sort of guilt-tripped you into doing something by pulling the family card?
I know I have.
While it’s hard to let family down, sometimes we have to refuse because we can’t satisfy everyone at the expense of our own comfort and peace of mind.
As adults or rational-minded people, we expect others to understand when we decline, and hopefully continue having a decent relationship.
And I’m pretty sure this what this Reddit user - the cousin of a bride-to-be - thought would be the case when she refused to be the bridesmaid at her cousin’s wedding. But it was certainly not what she got.
According to 10 Daily, the cousin in question took to Reddit to air out her frustration caused by her cousin who tried to guilt-trip her into being a bridesmaid at her wedding – something she was within her rights to turn down.
After she politely declined the request, however, she was met with a series of insults and curse words from the disgruntled bride who thought it okay to try and force her to be a part of the wedding party.
"Hey, sorry it’s last minute but as you know my wedding is on the 20th of this month," the bride wrote, before explaining a bridesmaid "backed out" and asked if she could "fill in", wrote the bride-to-be in the first seemingly decent text.
But after the cousin of the bride responded that even though the offer was “tempting”, she would have to decline, the bride-to-be quickly went from blushing bride to queen of the bridezillas.
First, she tried to guilt-trip her cousin into joining the wedding party by pulling the “we’re family, you can’t say no” card, completely ignoring the fact that her cousin had said it would make her feel uncomfortable.
“It doesn’t matter if it makes you feel uncomfortable, you’re just supposed to do things for your family”, she wrote. But when she sees this is not working, this bride-to-be then uninvited her poor cousin from the wedding.
But she doesn’t stop there. Clearly upset that her cousin is unphased by her lack of decency, the bride-to-be stoops even lower and fat-shames her.
“You’re too fat to be a bridesmaid anyway”, she writes in a text.
Just wow.
Judging from the cousin’s calm response which simply read, “I’m glad I backed out […]”, she wasn’t too bothered by her bridezilla-to-be cousin, and honestly her nonchalance should be applauded.
How would you have handled this situation if you were in her position? Do you think being family means not having the right to say no to certain things? Share your thoughts with us here.
