Twenty-six years after the dawn of democracy, scores of pupils still have to learn in dire conditions in the Eastern Cape as a result of empty promises made by the provincial government

Promises to fix and rebuild some of these schools, which were built as temporary structures during the apartheid regime, remain just that – promises. The school, which is made of prefabricated structures, was built in the 1970s as a temporary school building and was supposed to have been replaced a long time ago.

The school itself is in shambles: some of the classrooms are overcrowded, the roof leaks when it rains, the walls break easily because they are made out of boards and the toilets are an eyesore. “The conditions are very bad. The classroom ceilings have broken over the years and have had to be replaced regularly. When it rains, some of the classes become wet inside. The windowpanes are so old, you just pump into them and they fall out.

“We have children here, human beings. It is not conducive for us to work in such conditions. It is risky. You always have to look at the ceilings to see what is above you.” He said that after the project stopped, people started breaking in and stealing material which was left unattended. Not far from Bethelsdorp Comprehensive School is Van Der Kemp Primary School, which is also in a state of disrepair.

“We do not know why the department is not building our school because we have sent it letters several times over the past 15 years. It’s like our school does not exist. And yet two different MECs visited and saw the conditions. It is very painful that our children have to endure these conditions,” she said.

They have stolen all the money

The good and supposedly responsible people of the EC insist on consistently re-electing their anc govt responsible for this. They must like their kids being uneducated. You leave em alone!

It's a lie these schools were not built by apartheid government but apartheid puppets leaders Kaiser Matanzima and Lennox Sebe

I think you mean ANC lies , promises are kept !

loyisop ?

This is the same province that wants to change cities' names rather than provide basic services like clean water and functioning schools?

So let me get this right... The RACIST, white apartheid government showed more love for these folk than their own elected black government does? ANC supporters, please think about that for a bit...

You will find out that the funds to build the schools disappeared through corruption. UN must declare Corruption a crime again Humanity.

This a shame. They must just send their delegation to WesternCapeGov for case study. It's clear they knew nothing about City development. Construction of schools start from there.

it's these people in the underprivileged areas who have so much faith in the current government, that they are actually brainwashed by their fibbing , they complain, protests but at the end they still go and vote for the same party it's bizarre, aren't they that ignorant ❎😠💩😱

jcwLIFE ANC government is heartless,

jcwLIFE How can a high court judge appoint this provincial government to run a town (Makhanda) after dissolving its council?🤔

Children should blame their dumb parents who vote for liars & empty promises..

Politicians just LOVE promises for votes!!!!!!

Isnt that typical. Like some idiot MYANC politician promised Soweto free electricity according to residents who are protesting. Tito Mboweni is probably the first ANC politician to call a spade a spade.
