South African schools spend about R5 billion per year on electricity, and reducing these bills with energy efficiency interventions can have a massive impact on school finances - while benefiting the environment.
The electrical engineer Jason Samuels has highlighted some of these energy-efficiency interventions in a PhD about his research in the field.
After graduating with his master's and completing an internship with Eskom, Samuels decided to stick to academia for a little while longer. One of his research supervisors, Professor Thinus Booysen, nudged him to look into energy-efficiency interventions at schools.
