Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana star Jabu Mahlangu is recovering in hospital after he was involved in an accident early yesterday morning.

Mahlangu’s lawyer Mabu Marweshe told City Press that details of the accident were still sketchy.

“We have not seen him yet. The only thing we got from his brother was the confirmation that there was an accident in the early hours of the morning.

“It looks like there was more than one vehicle involved. They suspect that the occupants of the other vehicle might be injured too. Jabu is in the same hospital [with some of them],” Marweshe said yesterday.

The accident happened on New Modder Road in Benoni in Ekurhuleni.

Mahlangu, who is a television football analyst on SuperSport, was travelling in his white BMW M4, while the other vehicle involved was a taxi ferrying passengers.

Marweshe said he was not aware of the extent of the SuperSport brand ambassador’s injuries.

He said:

We will take full instructions from him once he has been released [from hospital].

Marweshe said they were preparing for possible legal action following the accident.

According to an eyewitness at the scene, Mahlangu allegedly ditched his car and ran away after the accident as he feared for his life.

“He had to run because his car crashed into the taxi. He left it on the road and it was there for most of Saturday morning before it was removed,” the witness said.

Marweshe confirmed that Mahlangu and some occupants of the taxi were admitted to the Far East Rand Hospital in Brakpan.

However, police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubele said that, by yesterday afternoon, no case related to the accident had been opened.

“There are no registered cases of reckless driving at the police station in the area for that day,” Makhubele said.

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
