ActionSA are the Joburg kingmakers. Will the party bring in another ex-DA member this week? A national boost for the party?

It’s been a firecracker of a start to South African politics in 2022. From Parliament fires to the ANC all fighting over Lindiwe Sisulu. Now, Herman Mashaba’s ActionSA looks set to throw its own cracker into the mix. The party has released a cryptic message ahead of the unveiling of a new member joining the party tomorrow.

Who will be the new ‘important’ ActionSA member?

In a statement released on Sunday, the party revealed that it will announce a “new member of national political consequence”. The party says that this new member will add great value to ActionSA. And its “programme of governance and diversity of leadership voices within the party.” ActionSA secured just under 10% of the vote in Gauteng last year.

“Arising from our 2021 local government election results, ActionSA has witnessed an unprecedented momentum in our organisation. Structures are being formed at a rapid pace as South Africans of all backgrounds are approaching ActionSA to join a party that is growing, diverse and challenging the ANC.”

ActionSA Spokesperson Lerato M-Ngobeni

Here’s the key bit. This new member will seemingly play a key role in building the party’s base outside of Gauteng.

“This includes a number of very prominent South Africans who will play an important role in developing a depth of leadership essential for a party aiming to achieve a national footprint.”

Can ActionSA be a truly national party?

During last year’s Local Government Elections, ActionSA only contested in 6 municipalities across the country. The party built up a small footprint in eThekwini in KZN. But held its base firmly in Johannesburg and Gauteng.

The “new member of consequence” is set to be announced at a press conference on Monday. As a result, murmurs are already beginning to take off. The question is being asked, will Mashaba’s new colleague be another ex-DA member?

No matter who it is. Do you think ActionSA will be able to repeat what it did in Gauteng in other provinces come 2024?
