Former chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has been directed to issue an unconditional apology for comments he made about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during a webinar in 2020.

On Thursday, the Judicial Conduct Appeals Committee unanimously confirmed the findings by the Judicial Conduct Committee in March that Mogoeng had breached the judicial code of conduct by getting embroiled in a political controversy.

In a statement on Thursday evening, the committee found that he had “breached article 14(2)(a) of the code of judicial conduct in that he was involved in extrajudicial activities which are incompatible with the confidence in and the impartiality of judges”.
