The West Rand District Municipality will be run by the DA, after the party’s Hullet Hild received the majority of votes. In the election of new leadership in the municipality yesterday, the DA’s Gerhard Kruger and Alme Swart were voted in as speaker and chief whip, respectively.
The DA won these positions through the support of the EFF and other opposition parties, just as it has in other municipalities, namely, City of Johannesburg, Mogale City and the City of Ekurhuleni.
Speaking to City Press, Hild said he was aware that it would not be an easy task to steer the district in the right direction.
“The main aim is to make sure they get the functions doing well and include service delivery. The municipality is not in a great position financially.” He said:
The West Rand oversees Mogale City in Krugersdorp, as well as Rand West City in Randfontein and Merafong in Carletonville, which are both led by the ANC.
Hild believes it is important for all these municipalities to work together, despite political differences. “We will sit down and carve a way we can work together and even they themselves want to deliver services; we will engage much better in the weeks to come. We will work towards making the Westonaria a better place.”
The DA has expressed its full confidence in the newly elected team.

“Although the task ahead of them will be tough, we believe they are more than capable of turning things around and will get things done in the West Rand. The DA will, in the coming days and weeks, announce its plans on how we intend to get things done and restore good governance in the district.”
The mayoral committee for the municipality will be appointed in the course of the week.
