The Emmy Award-winning Queer Eye returns in a search for a whole new roster of heroes in need of a little TLC. Get ready, y’all! This season, Queer Eye’s fearless ambassadors head to the Lone Star state with a homebase in Austin, TX. Watch as they work their life-changing magic yet again and transform the lives of deserving Texans.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
The Fab Five is back, and this time they’re in Texas - a red state with conservative views and a controversial new abortion law. It’s safe to say the Lone Star State needed a bit of Queer Eye magic, and our queens delivered.
The Netflix hit is a spin-off from the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and now returns for its sixth season on the streaming giant. Any concern that the show’s star might be fading since its comeback in 2018 can be forgotten – it’s only getting better, honey.
Our stars again do incredible work to support ordinary Americans facing personal challenges in this season. From organising a high school prom to building a barn for special needs animals - the show goes further than it ever has before. Every episode is packed with so much detail, care, and love that you can’t help but cry your eyes out each time our queer heroes make their appearance.
What I love most about Queer Eye is how it shows how people from different backgrounds, with different beliefs and identities, can come together in the most beautiful and authentic way. Something unbelievable and completely magical happens when we start to listen to each other’s stories and let our guards down.
One episode that highlights this so effortlessly is when the Fab Five make a fabulous arrival on the farm of rugged rancher and former army ranger Josh Eilers. Josh is instantly and visually uncomfortable by the presence of the gay city folk arriving with a bang. But the fabulous five, bursting with love and true understanding, slowly start connecting with Josh, and soon he allows them to do what they do best. By the end, Josh embraces his new friends and is sad to see them leave.
I think the world would be a much better place if we all stepped out of our echo chambers occasionally. The Fab Five is showing us that it can only be done with respect, compassion, and understanding for each other’s boundaries.
My highlight of the show is grooming expert Jonathan van Ness. It’s refreshing to see a person unapologetically be themselves while having bucket loads of compassion and understanding for those that maybe don’t get it just yet.
In episode 3, Jonathan invites Josh to ask him questions to help break down some barriers between them. Josh wants to know why Jonathan, who identifies as non-binary, wears heels. Without missing a beat, Jonathan points out that Josh’s cowboy boots have heels too, but his are just a bit taller. We wear what we feel comfortable in, and why shouldn’t we? A few inches difference in the heel of a shoe is a personal choice that harms nobody and makes the person wearing them feel like themselves. Who are we to judge?
There are many more moments like these throughout the show. Bobby Berk (Interior Design), Karamo Brown (Culture), Tan France (Fashion), and Antoni Porowski (Food & Wine) all echo these incredible qualities that Jonathan exudes. They don’t want to change the people they meet; they don’t want to give them drastic makeovers and then disappear. The aim of Queer Eye in 2022 is to help people be the best version of themselves and truly be aware of their own unique powers.
Queer Eye is a show that breaks boundaries in every way and creates a bridge between people from different walks of life. It encourages compassion, and it spreads nothing but love. I genuinely believe that it is a show everyone should watch. But get the tissues ready. You’re going to need at least one box per episode. Trust me.
