Waiting for projects to take off helped entrepreneur Sonia Mbele to think out of the box. This week the resourceful actor, producer and writer introduced Mzansi to her brand of bottled alkaline water called Alkamax, with a PH of 10+.

This means the water is free of acid, has been refined and is healthier.

When she arrived at the launch, Mbele, draped in a black and gold long dress, hugged and kissed her mom who came with her neighbour.

The intimate event, held in Melrose near Sandton, was filled with her close friends, family and media darlings such as actress and reality TV stars Tarina Patel and Zari Hassan, actress Sibusisiwe Jili and Micasa’s Mo-T.

Mbele said Alkamex was the fastest business venture she had ever worked on as it took her only four months to put together. It came at a time when parts of the country are facing water shortages.

A smiling Mbele said:

It is funny because everything I do in my life, I plan for years. There is a movie that I worked on for seven years and another project I worked on for five years, but this is the fastest business I have ever embarked on. This goes to show how fast water runs.

An excited Mbele explained why her water was worth consuming. “I stopped drinking anything fizzy 20 years ago, I do not eat meat, water has been part of my lifestyle. So for me this was just an opportunity to share myself. No mineral water compares to us because our PH level is 10+, which means we are the purest water in South Africa.”

The entrepreneur said she wanted to make it a family business to promote a healthy lifestyle. She partnered with her eldest son, with whom she modelled the brand.

The dream and vision included job creation and contributing to people having multiple income streams, something she learnt after being jobless for two years.

“I have been waiting for projects to take off, but this industry is not sustainable. I have been in entertainment for 25 years, the past two years have been tough. So that prompted me to have multiple streams of income. We had challenges, it has not been easy but it has not been that bad,” she added.

Alkamax has been on the market for a month now and it is targeted at every member of the community.

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
