Media24 has affirmed its dedication to independent journalism amid insinuations of its editorial independence being compromised as a consequence of its parent company, Naspers, donating to political parties.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) released the donations disclosed by political parties during the second quarter of the current financial year – July to September 2021.
It revealed that Naspers had made donations to the DA. The DA received R1 million from Naspers. The company said it would donate a similar amount to the ANC.
The details were released in line with the Political Party Funding Act, which requires all political parties to disclose donations of more than R100 000.
Ishmet Davidson, Media24’s chief executive, said: “Media24 fully supports the democratic process in South Africa which we do through independent, unbiased journalism.
“Accordingly, Media24 places a very high premium on editorial independence and integrity and will never compromise this. Hence, Media24 does not contribute to political parties.
“Although Naspers is our parent company, as a corporate it operates independent of Media24 with no influence on our editorial policies, decisions or coverage. The donations made by Naspers are entirely in their own name and on their own behalf.”
