The ANC is in the process of appointing a new mayor of Johannesburg to replace Geoff Makhubo, who passed away last month due to complications from Covid-19. He was 53.

The three names that have been put forward are member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for finance, Jolidee Matongo, MMC for environment, infrastructure and services, Mpho Moerane, and chair of chairpersons in the City of Joburg, Salphina Mulaudzi.

ANC Johannesburg deputy secretary, Loyiso Masuku, who also serves as the MMC for group corporate and shared services, was among the top six members who were nominated, but did not make the cut.

MMC for health and social development, Eunice Mgcina, as well MMC for public safety, Mally Mokoena, also made the top six.

Mgcina has been the acting mayor since Makhubo’s death.

The regional executive committee of the Johannesburg ANC convened on Friday and on Monday afternoon to discuss the process and nominate the mayoral candidates for submission to the provincial executive committee (PEC).

The governing party’s national executive committee will then have to make the final call on the matter.

ANC Johannesburg secretary, Dada Morero, said that the meeting held on Friday emphasised the need to ensure unity and renewal of the party during this period and beyond.

“This unity and renewal must also translate to providing credible leadership to the people of Johannesburg; leadership that will not compromise on the service delivery to the people of Johannesburg.

“The meeting of today resolved to recommend the three names of nominees to the PEC. The [regional executive committee] believes in the comrades recommended. As much as it prefers the first candidate, it [believes] in the collective wisdom of the three candidates,” Morero said.

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
