2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: Politics in the Twittersphere – how much misinformation did we get? By Tessa Knight

Only about 8% of South Africa’s 56.72-million people are on Twitter, with an internet penetration rate of between 50 and 60% . Even though the local Twittersphere is small, in the past it has proven to be a useful platform for the spread of information, particularly among youth during the #FeesMustFall campaign.

Despite the relatively small number of South Africans on Twitter, the top three political parties have a combined following of almost two million accounts. According to the engagement programme manager at Code4Africa, Amanda Strydom, Twitter is not necessarily just a microcosm for people who have a social media presence. “Silly things might be shared on Facebook, and then the next thing someone screengrabs it and shares it on WhatsApp, and suddenly it’s way bigger.”

2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: DA post-elections reckoning: Maimane leader till 2021, but party review to followDA leaders spent Monday behind closed doors in the discussion of the party’s disappointing election results — before emerging with the confirmation that leader Mmusi Maimane would remain in his position. But a comprehensive review of the DA’s structures and processes, last undertaken 15 years ago, is to follow. becsplanb Helen Zille's 'back seat' driving the DA is sorely needed right now. She is still the most astute politician of a bad bunch. Many people voted for the DA this time as a last ditch attempt to stem the black nationalism tide of the ANC/EFF. DA are in for a bigger shock in 2021.

2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: The Premier League, Next Generation – ANC plays it safeThe ANC left nothing to rumour as it unceremoniously announced the premier candidates for seven of the eight provinces where it will be governing in the next five years. There were no surprises, not even the omission of a candidate’s name for the troubled North West.

2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: White anxiety and the rise of the Freedom Front PlusThe FF+ slogan, ‘Slaan Terug’ (Fight Back), and its media managers’ digital and physical campaigns in the party’s green, orange and white posters, which mimic the colours of the old Afrikaner republic ‘Vierkleur’ – four-colour flag – saw its election plans fly. The party hurt the DA’s ambitious campaign to win three provinces – but, as one observer notes, most Afrikaners still voted DA. ferialhaffajee I'm not a VF+ supporter but saying their logo resembles the Vierkleur is a bit of a stretch. Only green (different shade) and white (which doesn't really count) are common to both. Cope, with red too, is closer to the Vierkleur!

2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: DA infighting: Maimane contradicts party chair’s comments on limp election performanceA federal council, the DA’s top decision and policy structure between congresses, is being brought forward from its initial July date to make key decisions after the DA’s election let-down — and to stop party unity from fraying. The party leadership doesn’t appear to be on the same page. While DA leader Mmusi Maimane wrote to members that he accepted personal responsibility for the poll results, DA federal chairperson Athol Trollip publicly talked about collective responsibility. At stake is the DA’s character, and decisions will not be uncontested. marianne_merten DA is in the same state like ANC! 2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: The world dissects South Africa’s latest electoral foray, but not entirely accuratelyThe just-completed South African election proved a challenge for foreign reporting as the question at hand was not really about who was going to win. Accordingly, foreign journalists often fell back on the old standbys of describing this starkly divided society, a tale of two cities, but on a national scale. Once the results were in, what those results mean for the future now becomes the next challenge for observers – just as it is for every South African, including its president.

2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: ANALYSIS: Existential crisis of land, language and self-definition prompts FF+ growthIn her tender, recently published biography ‘Cul de Sac’, penned at the age of 95, Elsa Joubert, considered one of the greatest South African writers of her generation, reflects on the 21st Century existential crisis of Afrikaner identity, inexorably linked to land, language and a putrid history. The electoral gains of the FF+ reflect this mood of some Afrikaans speakers who hope to find a meaningful political heimat in a free South Africa.

'Broad church' politics under pressure after election 2019The ANC must decide if it fears the EFF so much that it panders to its pressures – or whether it sees the bigger picture of the necessity for more centrist and market-friendly initiatives to kickstart growth, writes Daniel Silke. DanielSilke The corrupt must have used corrupt means to win DanielSilke One thing was made abundantly clear last week. If Ramaphosa can't or doesn't deliver, or the cANCer swaps him out with a less popular model, the EFFluent will be the major beneficiary. Not the DA or the IFP. That should worry anyone who doesn't like the way Malema talks.
