She was halfway through writing the poem that she was to deliver on 20 January at the inaugartion of the 46th President of the United States when a violent mob attacked the Capitol.
Today as Amanda Gorman, 22, read her powerful poem The Hill We Climb aloud she was standing on the very steps where the shocking attack on American democracy took place.
It gave her the power to complete the poem that would echo through the crowd just two weeks later.
As Joe Biden was named President, Kamala Harris became the first Black, Asian-American, female Vice-President.
Amanda is the youngest inaugural poet in US history, joining a small group of famous poets that have gone before her, including Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, Elizabeth Alexander, and Richard Blanco
"We will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one ... There is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it. If only we're brave enough to be it," Amanda said.
