- Seven staff members in the office of the Ekurhuleni mayor have tested positive for Covid-19.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has tested positive for Covid-19 after he felt mild symptoms on Wednesday.

Makhura is the third premier to test positive in the last week, after his counterparts in the North West and Western Cape, Job Mokgoro and Alan Winde, announced that they had contracted the virus.
"On Wednesday, 08 July 2020, I experienced some mild symptoms. On Thursday, 09 July 2020, I decided to self-quarantine and test for Covid-19 as a precautionary measure. Today, Friday, 10 July 2020, I received my test results, confirming that I have tested positive for Covid-19," Makhura said in a statement on Friday.
Makhura is now in self-isolation and will work from home over the next 14 days while monitoring his health.
"Given the fact that I only have mild symptoms, I will continue to ensure that the provincial executive council and provincial coronavirus command council respond adequately to weather the storm of the pandemic in order to save more lives," he said.
The premier also appealed to Gauteng residents to continue playing their part by observing the golden rules of washing hands regularly, wearing masks and practising physical distancing.
City of Ekurhuleni
Meanwhile, seven staff members in the office of Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina have tested positive.
"The seven confirmed cases include the following senior officials; a member of the mayoral committee, the head of department and the spokesperson to the executive mayor," the mayor's office said in a statement on Friday.
Masina, however, has tested negative.
This comes after the staff were tested on Thursday, 9 July 2020.
The Office of the Executive Mayor has since been closed for decontamination and Masina will conduct council business via virtual platforms until further notice.
As of Thursday, 9 July 2020, Gauteng registered a total of 81 546 cases and 515 deaths.
