“He didn’t look like a thug or anything,” recalls the first emergency medical technician on the scene after the 16-year-old was fatally shot on the streets of Bensonhurst. The date was Aug., 23, 1989—“a Wednesday,” recalls a friend of Hawkins, Luther Sylvester, offering the kind of detail that only someone who lost someone he loved would probably still remember.
