WADA’s marijuana rules are outdated, moralistic, and discriminatory—and they’re being used to manipulate and impede the fastest woman in America

Meanwhile, Sha’Carri Richardson has kept quiet. I reached out to her agent, Renaldo Nehemiah, to request an interview. He declined on Richardson’s behalf, noting that her statement on theexplained “how and why we’re in this place.” He said he’s “advised Sha’Carri to take some time to heal from this traumatic experience.” I replied that I understood, and that I hope this will spur serious reevaluation of the ban on marijuana. “Me too,” he said.

Rather than consider its “findings” in relation to individual sports, WADA has applied the THC ban across the board. In so doing, it appears to have skirted the need to justify it with respect to any sport, and can thereby assert its moralistic mandate unchecked.

She did this to herself. Go to the WADA Prohibitive Drug List and see what's included. Not everything on there is a PED. Furthermore, she lied to the American public by saying, 'My parents kept me grounded.' She wouldn't have smoked pot if her parents were involved.

When participating in an organized sport you must abide by the rules. Whether THC is a performance enhancing drug or whether the rule is outdated etc. has nothing to do with discrimination. ShacarriRichardson made a choice to break a rule she knew was there. She impeded herself.

Just imagine a hammer, discus or shotputt thrower high on weed. Mmmmmmmmmm

This particular rule could be out of date and should be revisited. That said a rule is a rule and the athletes know the rules. Individuals need to own up to their actions. To say the rule is discriminatory is ridiculous. It is not a US rule and applies to all the athletes.

I hope that a running-based organization, such as Runners World, can help provide those not familiar with track and field or international anti-doping testing with greater context on ShacarriRichardson's case. Please see my thread below for some insight

How many times are y’all gonna undermine her brave attempt at accountability? That is the hero work. It’s great that she’s fast and awesome but I want my kids to be like her in the sense that she made a mistake and owned it. Stop taking that from her.

Are the rules meant for just one person in the world? You want everyone running high on grass?

🙌 🙌 🙌

Your focus is very narrow. One reason marijuana is banned by WADA is because it can cause errors in judgement, which could result in injury. Doesn't affect runners as much as other sports. But the standard has been set across all disciplines.

Whether you agree with them are not, the rules are there for all to see. We can’t condone breaking of rules that some people think are outdated. If you don’t like a rule, try to change it, don’t break it!

I mean everybody else tested CLEAN...Im just saying.

Who is running your Twitter? Where was this outrage a month ago? This is embarrassing - especially coming from a running publication that understands there are international rules - ones you should’ve known about more than a week ago.

Rules are rules. Sure weed is not performance enhancing for runners but it can be for other sports. She knowingly broke the rules and is paying the price for it. She will still be able to compete in the Olympics. I guarantee this is not the first time that she has smoked

How is she being gaslighted? She knew the rules; she chose (perhaps with good, understandable reason) to break them; now she's paying the price.

I totally agree. If she had a drink…it wouldn’t have mattered. Alcohol kills

LMFAO!!! Really? You really think that? Time to cancel my subscription to your 'magazine'

If u dont break it, it cannot do you anything.

IDK, if you all follow the same common-sense rules then they aren't any of those things. Why do athletes think they are so special that they can bend or break the rules? That should be the real question...

Puleez 🙄

RW=BS

Agree that the rules may be outdated and so may need to be revised. However, they are the current rules for EVERY athlete, black, white, purple, whatever. NOT racism in my opinion.

Yeah. Let’s just forget morals?

Here’s the full quote from President Biden, that you needlessly edited down just give a wrong impression “The rules are the rules, everybody knows that going in. Whether they should remain that is a different issue. I was proud of how she responded”

Were they discriminatory when Michael Phelps got popped with the same suspension?

Ok, off the point I know, but imagine someone writing that opening description about soft cheekbones and big eyes about any male athlete. It just wouldn't happen.

This is perhaps a very American centric view. Not so sure a lot of other countries are as willing to strike cannabis from the list.

And she should lose those stupid fake eye lashes.

That’s going too far. Marijuana use might need another look, but to call it discriminatory is ridiculous.

Did she know the rules?

Race is a political construct. We are humankind. All the same species. This rule is not discriminatory, it was put in place and accepted and supported by the US’ peer nations. The only fault for her suspension lies with herself.

People who are on the side of WADA and USADA need to do some research on their efficacy. They are a failure at preventing drug use. Like a huge failure. They also ruin the careers of athletes over nonsense. Sometimes layer changing the rules that ruined a career.

And the accusation you just made was also moralistic and discriminatory. So there’s that.

She knew the rules. She broke them. She must pay the price. It’s very simple and has nothing to do with outdated rules. It has to do with personal responsibility which she clearly lacks. Stop making her a victim.

Some questions: Did she travel to the Trials with marijuana? If not, who supplied her with marijuana? THC is not performance enhancing, but does it aid in recovery? Even if the rules are outdated, she was well aware of them as she has admitted. InvestigateMore

The rules apply to the world. WORLD Anti Doping, so NO it’s not be used to manipulate Americans.

Obviously they made these rules up last month just to stop her
