A new study offers one of the most comprehensive looks yet at how much of the world’s largest economy has shut down in the past three weeks

At least one-fourth of the U.S. economy has suddenly gone idle amid the coronavirus pandemic, an unprecedented shutdown of commerce that has darkened stores from Manhattan to Gilpin County, Colo., an analysis conducted for The Wall Street Journal shows.

This headline is deeply misleading. It is not the case that, absent state-imposed shutdowns, output now would be what it was before the outbreak. A significant chunk of that loss is caused by businesses and consumers responding to the virus itself.
