... [+]The last Saturday before Christmas has been a bonanza for U.S. malls in recent years.

The crowds on that day rival those of Black Friday, and conversions - the number of shoppers buying, rather than browsing, are higher. In recent years it has become one of the rare days when malls have an edge over e-commerce. When it’s too late to order online if you need it delivered before Christmas, you head to the mall.

But this year the pandemic has given even the worst procrastinators a lot of reasons to skip the frenetic, last-chance, rush to the mall. Location analytics firm Placer.ai ran the numbers on recent Super Saturdays at 15 top U.S. malls and found that it ranked as the second busiest shopping day, after Black Friday. In 2018 and 2019, mall traffic on Super Saturday was up significantly compared to the Saturday after Thanksgiving, with an increase of 18% in 2018 and almost 30% in 2019.that Super Saturday set a one-day record for sales, at $34.4 billion, according to retail research firm Customer Growth Partners.
