There's so much happening on the internet these days, it's hard to make an impression, let alone go viral —, and song-based memes are disseminated weekly. It's hard to break through the digital ether, but for 16-year-old Paige Gozon, all it took was a few short videos of her hair, because, until this month, she hadn't washed it in exactly eight years.

"After a few weeks going unwashed, it basically turned into a game to see how long I could go," Gozon recalls. "After a year, I simply declared it was my lifestyle. I really did embrace it." Over those eight years, Gozon rinsed her hair regularly and used a few additional products to control the appearance of her scalp. "I would use generic drugstore brands of baby powder and," she explains, "which I would apply while blow-drying my freshly rinsed hair so that my roots would look less 'greasy' and my lifestyle was better concealed."

And it turns out not washing her hair did come with a couple of perks. "My hair would grow much faster in comparison to all my friends and family members," Gozon says. "I wouldn't have to deal with split ends and my hair wouldn’t break off, as many of my friends' hair does."
