“I was just taken aback because a, it was an amazing movie, but b, I was like, ‘Oh sh*t. I think Guillermo is making a movie about a main character who essentially doesn’t change,’ which is so different from most Western storytelling,” says Johnson in conversation with Del Toro, in the latest edition of Deadline’s video series, The Process. “All the neurons were firing because I felt like I understood what you were doing with this.

The film based on the 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham centers on Stanton Carlisle , an ambitious carny who boasts a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words, watching as he hooks up with the psychiatrist Dr. Lilith Ritter who is even more dangerous than he is.
