Today Russia is seen as the leading country egging on mercenaries to help it wield influence

wanted help last year to tackle a jihadist insurgency in northern Mozambique, various private military firms were keen to oblige. Mr Nyusi chose Russia’s Wagner Group, which vowed to make short work of the rebels. But after a bunch of its men were killed, it pulled out, humiliated.

In the years after most African countries gained independence, mercenaries were notorious for supporting secessionist movements and mounting coups. They fought for Moïse Tshombe in Katanga as it tried to break away from Congo in the early 1960s, and in Biafra when it sought to secede from Nigeria in the late 1960s. More recently Simon Mann, a former officer in Britain’s special forces, tried to overthrow the dictator of oil-rich Equatorial Guinea in 2004, but ended up in jail.

Wagner has been hired to prop up a number of shaky African regimes. In Sudan it tried to sustain the blood-drenched dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir. He was ousted last year after big protests. In 2018 hundreds of Wagner men arrived in the Central African Republic to guard diamond mines, train the army and provide bodyguards for an embattled president, Faustin-Archange Touadéra.

double standard,dog of America

Because you piece of shgt arm labels to distabalize our countries!because of your sick hunger....

Come on, you won't fool us with your agitprop. It's Blackwater and the United States.

Wagner Group will be liquidated. Yevgeny Prigozhin will be dead. In the 90s, Prigozhin committed a crime against my cousin in St. Petersburg (he stole her apartment and raped), in 2015 she died of pneumonia, was presumably killed, could recognize Prigozhin as a criminal!

don't worry.

Do other countries do it differently?

Why is Mr Modi silent at the Chinese beating up the Indian Soldiers? Where are the Surgical strike battalions and why is the Indian Media totally silent?

Change is coming. It will not stop. TO MUCH FORCE. IDEAS CHANGE. IT IS A HUMAN PATTERN. BE NICE. USE MONEY AS A TOOL. A TOOL YOU HUMANS MADE THE VALUE OF UP. YOU DO FOLLOW THE RELIGIOUS RULE'S YOU HUMANS MADE UP! FACT! EVIDENCE! PROOF!

It’s cheaper to manipulate

It's not Africans who hire mercenaries, but Western powers, colonialists and big corporations who have vested interests in our land. Remember the son of Margaret Thatcher?

How about “American contractors in the Middle East”...?

Why? Answer here

Quick, let’s have another deflection article on Iran.

Blackwater, the US mercenary firm, she could do much better, with the blessing of freedom

In 2020!! Incredulous. Viva Che...

oil money is being used to peddle influence in hopeless countries like Venezuela n Syria

Include Russia and US

Putin is more like a ringleader than a statesman.

Did you guys also write about America using mercenaries . I mean if you’re just doing this for the fun of it carry on 🤣🤣, but if serious, do better , yakno!

ruslantrad

Why? For the same reason Eric Prince uses mercenaries to side step the ethics & protocol still remaining with our army , navy , national guard and the Marines. For profit soilders don’t have loyalty to the constitution and the American people

The Politician, not TheEconomist

Do they dress down in T shirts too & pretend to be PM advisers?

Why temporary layoffs may become permanentForty-two percent, or 11.6 million, of all jobs lost through April 25 due to Covid-19 will become permanent, according to the University of Chicago. We can all move to PA and work in the coal mines. What a striking grasp of the obvious...Anyone jobless from this has no guarantees and the length of time, now, has been sufficient for some employers to gauge impact of cuts in employment. There won't be new hiring for months...months. Yahoo I'm afraid so..
