Regeneron’s antibody therapy to treat high-risk Covid-19 patients, the agency announced Friday, adding its voice to calls for the company to lower its prices and ensure equal access to the lifesaving treatment around the world.Key Facts

An expert WHO panel recommended Regeneron’s antibody cocktail for patients at risk of developing severe Covid-19 and patients with severe or critical Covid-19 who haven’t mounted their own antibody response. The group said new studies showed the therapy is most effective in these two groups and was unlikely to significantly benefit others, as it recommended rapid antibody testing to determine the most suitable patients.

Regeneron's high cost—along with the challenges of testing for antibodies—means it could be difficult for lower income countries to access it, the WHO panel said, but added that its backing of the treatment should help boost global access.on Regeneron to “address the high price and limited production” of the treatment, calling on the company to share its technological know-how and allow others to make it.

Regeneron is collaborating with Swiss pharma Roche to increase its global supply and increase access outside the U.S., the companya withering rebuke on the uneven access to Regeneron’s treatment after the WHO’s announcement. “It is simply not fair that people living in low- and middle-income countries cannot access new Covid-19 treatments... because of pharmaceutical companies’ monopolies and wishes for high returns,” said Dr.
