Cerys Johnson is a rare breed, she holds the position of CEO of a tech company in the U.K. REPL, is a global retail tech firm with more 340 employees across six different countries, and seventh country, Germany launching soon. Under her leadership the company has continued its trajectory of 30% annual growth, but she has also transformed the culture of the company whereThe stepping stones achieved started with diversity, and in particular increasing the gender balance in the company.

The recruitment team also went through structural changes by working more closely with operations. The process has is formalized with weekly meetings, where the teams sit with recruitment leads to understanding better whom they are hoping to attract. Over time, she has found individuals find a space where they want to contribute and she encourages this. By creating a collective approach, it also means the onus lies on everyone to share learnings and good practice as they all take responsibility for promoting and sustaining an inclusive culture. In doing so, this approach does not become a silo or a pet project.

Increased transparency at an individual level combined with new teams and new ways of working in different functions created a new blueprint for inclusion. For Johnson, this means the right conditions to allow people to bring broader thinking and experiences to discussions. One of the triggers to open up conversations and allow more creativity to flourish is by embracing failure. Johnson is clear that this approach enables colleagues to be brave in sharing new thinking and ideas.
