To understand corporate chameleons like China’s Huawei, look to the era when the East India Company and other firms blurred the boundary between government and business

Chinese state capitalism as it exists today poses a special challenge to a world used to clear divisions between governments and private companies. But while role-swapping and hybridization between states and firms might seem new, it actually represents the return of a once-pervasive model.

After the European voyages of discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries, the most important trading networks between West and East weren’t built by kings or private merchants but by “company-states” like Britain’s East India Company, which combined the profit motive of corporations with the governmental powers of sovereign states.

Ahmad_Noorani Us Face New East India Company?

Have to look back so long ago? Ask the US oil industry.

This apprehension of Huawei equally applies to many of high tech US global giant corporates and nations need protection from them,of their people, life liberty from abuse of corporate power to political ends like east india co. But how? Only a global federal sovereign in UN do it!

Nothing has changed.

Very different these days.

And pakistan is thr only country who wannebe ready to become their slaves. Arzookazmi30 .ye to wahi baat ho gai ki ek padosi ko lagta hai ki uska ek padosi uska makaan tod dega, to us padosi ne dusre padosi ko apna makaan de diye.

Numb business man should remember former US president Obamas speech at wall street, before driving the world in troubled water. The UN should never accept the rules of unregulated market.

And ambliuxioming diplomats started selling products of private companies and have the guts to brazenly advocate and promote on behalf of companies. Going beyond diplomatic protocols and diplomacy. Lobbying comes at a cost we all understand. Who and how much ?

China has never sent warships to the front of other countries to provoke (as the United States did in the South China Sea), nor will it launch wars (opium war, Iraq war, etc.)

'What's good for General Motors is good for America' The lines aren't even blurred in the US.

All the nations have sad pasts. Let our future be different.

“corporate chameleons” 👏

Exactly like the big companies in both US and EU. Can you guys try to find sth. that unique in China to blame on? Open your mind and try to find a new topic. It's geting bored to see such similar stories every day.

So apperantly, China is following UK’s old path.

China has never maligned Apple. A country that lacks confidence is afraid of even a foreign company. How incompetent!

There is no blur. EVERYTHING in China is the Communist Parties property and resource. EVERYTHING.

this is not the 1800s

You don't have to go back that far. Look to Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, GE, Chiquita, US Steel, AT&T, Verizon, Standard Oil, and dozens of other companies, all joyfully having their way with entire populations.

Huawei is as ethical as any large USA or European Company. Huawei has been subjected business restrictions because of its lead in 5G Network, Mobile Phone and AI. Huawei Huawei
