What to know about BA.2, new omicron subvariant detected in several US states

BA.2 numbers around the world are rising, with at least 40 countries reporting cases.

Scientists warn that omicron's whirlwind spread across the globe practically ensures it won't be the last worrisome coronavirus variant."It is the nature of viruses to evolve and mutate, so it's to be expected that we will continue to see new variants emerge as the pandemic goes on," said Dr. Meera Chand, the COVID-19 incident director at the UK Health Security Agency, in prepared remarks."So far, there is insufficient evidence to determine whether BA.2 causes more severe illness than Omicron BA.1, but data is limited."

Seems like even though some of these issues may be real; they just want to keep it going amd even need to find something to hold on to after the pandemic has ended. Amd why the push to hand out and wear N95 masks NOW We weren't given these during the worst!

They have to find another reason to ensue panic. Now we have now issue being showcased 'Long-Covid' that puts the world in big trouble they say even though the pandemic will send soon. Stop This is never going to end. Just stop. Omg 😱 means another booster shot We knew this was going to happen. This is what viruses do, morphing to survive. Some strains of influenza that killed some of my family in 1918 is still living in strains of flu today.

As BA.2 variant spreads to US, WHO warns of future virus mutationsAs the latest wave of COVID-19 infections begins to subside in the United States, the head of the World Health Organization warned the end of the pandemic might not be as near as some would like to believe, and a coordinated global effort may be needed to reduce the risk posed by future variants. “It is dangerous to assume that omicron will be the last variant or that we’re in the endgame,” Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in remarks to the WHO executive board Monday. And we should listen to them why? Everyone else has been wrong this whole time... don't know who is worse. Them, Fauci, the CDC or Inslee 30 corona variants to go. I want to be sedated. People need to understand that this our lives now. Unless there is another world war or an asteroid hits, this is it. Variant after variant. Constant fear mongering over the common cold. This will never end. Your lives are never going to return to normal.

What we know about the Omicron sub-variant BA.2Experts caution against sounding the alarm bell and say there is no evidence that BA.2 is deadlier, while there are indications that it could be more transmissible than the original Omicron variant.

Scientists keep an eye on 'stealth' Omicron variant BA.2This version of the coronavirus, which scientists call BA.2, has been found in at least 40 countries, including the U.S. Don't be a Covidiot Stealthy huh. "It is the nature of viruses to evolve and mutate, so it's to be expected that we will continue to see new variants emerge as the pandemic goes on," said Dr. Meera Chand, the COVID-19 incident director at the UK Health Security Agency, in prepared remarks.S."So far, there is insufficient evidence to determine whether BA.2 causes more severe illness than Omicron BA. The WHO recommended Monday that health officials start investigating the strain’s characteristics to determine whether it is “a variant of concern” for countries around the world.1, but data is limited..

" The evolution of COVID-19 subvariants is not new.S. The delta variant also had several subvariants, but scientists referred to all of them as delta. BA.2 has been found in the United Kingdom, India, Denmark and other countries.2, however, has earned its own designation due to rising numbers across several nations. Although it's been called the"stealth" omicron variant, the new subvariant,"can absolutely be detected through traditional surveillance mechanisms whether through rapid testing or PCR," said Dr.2? It is unclear where this mutation of omicron first originated or whether the current vaccines on the market are effective against this new strain, but infectious disease specialists say people who have already experienced a breakthrough infection with the initial omicron strain could have “super immunity” against BA.

John Brownstein, chief innovation officer at Harvard University's Boston Children's Hospital and ABC Medical Correspondent. Conventional COVID-19 tests can show a positive or a negative result, but they can't determine specific variants. For that, scientists need to do additional genetic sequencing. Conveniently, the omicron variant has a particular genetic signature that allows scientists to quickly and easily determine if the sample is omicron or not. The new BA.

2 subvariant does not have that feature, meaning scientists can no longer use this shortcut -- though they can still identify the subvariant using genetic sequencing technology. Because of this, the BA.2 subvariant has sometimes been referred to as the"stealth" variant. But for the general public, conventional COVID-19 tests will still work to detect the new subvariant. Ultimately, while scientists and public health officials are urging continued research and surveillance, experts say there is little reason to worry.

"BA.2 is important from a public health perspective, but it doesn't fundamentally change at this moment, how we think about the impact in the population," Brownstein said."A lot more work needs to be done to understand severity, breakthrough infections, and immunizations before you can make any statement about clinical relevance." "While it's important to understand that in the family of omicron, there is a sub-lineage that is potentially more transmissible, it's not necessarily a cause for panic," Brownstein added.
