States across the West are at risk of electricity shortages this summer as a crippling drought reduces the amount of water needed to generate hydroelectric power

States across the West are at risk of electricity shortages this summer as a crippling drought reduces the amount of water available to generate hydroelectric power.

Meanwhile, streamflow forecasts for Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona are among the five driest on record, according to an update this month by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The West is gripped in one of the most severe droughts on record, with California among many places getting less than half of average precipitation. Mostly dry years over the past decade—fueled in part by climate change—have left so little moisture in the ground that it is sopping up much of the runoff normally destined for reservoirs, hydrologists say.Noah Berger/Associated Press

The North American Electric Reliability Corp., a nonprofit overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, warned in a report last month that across the West, grid stability is a “significant concern for the summer,” with supply and demand projections at levels similar to 2020. In Northern California, Lake Oroville water levels are so low that by late summer a key hydroelectric plant may not be able to generate power.“We’re having to watch that very, very carefully here, between now and August, to see if the reservoir levels drop enough that we see a significant decrease in generation,” Mr. Mainzer said.

Does it “reduce the amount of water needed” or the amount available?

Desalinization plants are the answer on the west coast.

Strengthening internal supply chains best way to compete with countries like China. Cut dependency on foreign goods

Gee. Maybe they still need natural gas and nuclear for a while.

Unless things change drastically, it's going to get much, much worse

So maybe the shift of public and private funds away from fossil fuel dependency , and other existing energy sources and redirect it towards alternative energy sources isn’t a waste of money after all

Welcome to Joe Biden's America 💥🇺🇸💥

Really? Like there aren't any other options? LOL

Go solar.

Western propaganda will say the sun is interfering with their infrastructure and that the sun needs to comply with the rules based system!

The amount of water needed stays the same. Drought reduces the amount of water available

It reduces amount of water available not amount needed. Still need the same amount of water to generate a kilowatt. More great writing and journalism from WSJ.

LasVegasLocally A lot of talk about reducing demand, but governments need to discuss supply side. Situation isn’t getting better - desalination plants or any out-of-the-box solutions

LasVegasLocally We are simply taking more water than the Colorado is giving. 20 years now. It’s no longer a drought. This is normal. Invoking “drought” allows us to still be irresponsible and take the same amount of water “hoping” next year the “drought” ends. And next year, etc. It won’t.

Put ice cubes in the water.

Don’t Worry Texas tedcruz Will Bail On You Again!

Also we are totally over-fishing the seas.

This was never sustainable. Wait till people figure out the danger they were placed in.

offmymind7 Thousands of nuclear bombs and no nuclear reactors? Mmmm. Why rely on hydro in one of the driest places on earth. ? Maybe stop farming Almonds.

oil to the moon

But solar and wind .Ban Tesla driving this summer

Yes, I will be today's grammar jerk for you. The amount of water that hydro generators need is baked into the design, and never 'reduced.' You are welcome.

Yep! And that is why I moved back to the East Coast it is worse then anyone can imagine
