Anya MeyerowitzParis has many lovely parts to it: the buzz of the Champs Elysee, the vintage finds peppered amongst the designer shops in Le Marais, and the myriad opportunities for a perfect steak tartare on every corner, to name a few. But perhaps one of the nicest things about it, is that it's only a two-hour trip on the- here, brilliant fares can be found year-round and with up to 19 trains running a day, it means that organising an impromptu trip is as easy as holiday planning gets.
Seen from the chic velvet armchairs and past the colourful, oversized artwork of the lobby, the green courtyard centres around a magnificent living wall that spans the top of the building to the bottom. At it's feet, a water feature bubbles through the courtyard, sheltered by the lightly-perfumed camellia trees, attracting birds that give the space a feeling of calm.
A massage, nice though it is, can often blend into the memories of past treatments: they're all relaxing, but all more or less the same. However, my massage at the Guerlain Spa is the best I have ever had; the technique felt refreshingly intuitive, the strokes were long and rhythmic and the background music was calming but uplifting, not the usual mellow soundtracks .
Perhaps the biggest giveaway that you are experiencing the best the world has to offer comes, oddly, in the form of the pillow menu. Choose between rose-scented goose feather, bamboo fiber, or memory foam perfumed with coconut milk - or perhaps opt for a range to be brought up, so you can try them at your leisure?
