As the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise in large swaths of the U.S.
Indoor gatherings, bars and house parties are risky—even if it’s a small gathering with family members—because the disease can jump between people more easily in tighter spaces with poor ventilation. Outdoor activities are safer, but any gathering, such as a neighborhood barbeque or a beach party, where people are packed together poses a risk, especially if everyone isn’t wearing a mask and keeping six feet away from each other, Rohde said.
Even outdoor gatherings where everyone wears face coverings aren’t completely without risk if people momentarily take masks off to eat or drink or talk, which is why Rohde recommends stepping away from the group to eat or drink and returning with a mask on. , for example, keeping outdoor gatherings to 12 or less people and limiting them even further to six or less if there’s food or drink, along with having guests bring their own food and utensils to minimize contact.
Going outside with your household to watch fireworks or have a picnic in your neighborhood while wearing masks and staying six feet away from everyone would be a low-risk activity, Rohde said.“When we are without a vaccine, what we’re seeing right now is that when we’re interact with people and we’re not careful, you’re bringing that risk factor back to your family or friends or co-workers,” Rohde said.
