Chicken hatcheries say they're seeing a spike in interest from people wanting to raise the birds at home. A poultry expert says that for the average person keeping half a dozen chickens in the summer,"you would get plenty of eggs for the family."Chicken hatcheries say they're seeing a spike in interest from people wanting to raise the birds at home.
"A lot of the stores and processing plants in New York City have closed as well," Fox says,"and a lot of our birds end up there." Suggesting that some customers might be affected by the stress millions of people are now feeling, she adds,"Everyone is very anxious, and in some cases very impatient." As for what breeds people might look for, Monaco says,"It depends on what you want. There's egg layers, that are strictly for egg-laying. There's dual-purpose, which are egg layers but they're also meat birds."
"You get into the Rhode Island Reds and the Plymouth Rocks, they're American breeds, they lay a decent-sized egg, but they're a bigger bird. They're also a meat bird."The number of eggs a hen can lay each week usually depends on the sun, Monaco says.
No one has really been interested in raising chickens since 1964 they just sort of had to.
My family hasn’t raised chickens (for meat-never eggs) since the Great Weasel Massacre of ‘03. Never again.
Ask more questions, friends. Where do the male chicks go? How do they get to your neighborhood feed store?
I bought my coop in January. 😐 Hoping to rescue somebody else's poor choices!
XGirlNYC Our village doesn't permit this.
Roosters show up out of nowhere. It even happened in Brooklyn. I hope they like getting woken up at 5 AM.
bro, no one in the world has seen anything like this.

I love my chickens but don't buy chicks thinking you will have eggs soon, they don't lay untill 6 months of age.
Let the hatcheries and egg industry die out
If we just stopped eating eggs we would be ok
Everyone I know who already has chickens is adding to their flock, myself included. There's a feeling that we will need to feed our neighbors and community soon.
I’ll take 100 please.
Both useful as a tweet, and extremely satisfying to tweet a picture of a tweety bird while sharing it.
this is not going to end well for a lot of chickens...
Damn Amy HOA!
Good. People are getting it. 👏
Do people realize these chicks need to be 2 yrs old before they lay?
if that adorable chick is male he's going to be thrown alive into a high-speed grinder
Sounds like an excellent way to spread bird flu!
Its spring! We are doing what we are supposed to do, prepare for winter.
Missypoo586 you ain’t alone
Careful of predictions when people are panic attacking.
We're adding 8 new blueberry bushes on our property in WallaWalla. One of nature's super fruits, grows surprisingly well in our cold climate, if you dig in 50% peat moss mixed with 25% soil / 25% sand and then toss coffee grounds and pine cones around them, they produce!
And the mice that will come with them. Ugh
I've had my backyard flock for 5years. They're our pets that are now feeding the neighbors too! backyardchickens StayHomeSaveLives
There's gonna be a lot of dead chickens.
Check your zoning laws first to avoid hefty fines! Then see how your neighbors feel about chickens next door. Raising hens has a learning curve for everyone in the family, but, if everything goes well, it is very rewarding. BTW, Khaki Campbell ducks lay great eggs, too.
And key avian flu in, 3-2-1... Someday we’ll realize the true problem is us—humans. We’re unnecessary except to each other. And we can’t even get that part right.
I can attest to this being true in my area of central WA. The three shops that sell chicks in my area have sold thousands in the past three weeks.
Welcome to little Havana. Signed, Hialeah, Florida
Then there will be lots of chickens that end up abandoned or left at the animal shelter once this is over, because humans are irresponsible. It’s like getting puppies at Christmas & bunnies at Easter. It’s cute, but many end up in shelters or die due to lack of basic care.

Buy now, get eggs in … October. You all better take care of those little birds.
Having chickens is work. Consider that if you are thinking of doing this.
I love my chickens. They're fun but they are not easy. They can get complicated health problems even if your really careful. I suspect a lot of people won't know what they're getting into and the poor birds will suffer.
2021 New headline: Avian flu sweeps through America in second pandemic in two years.
I just hope these aren't disposable pets that people will neglect or look to get rid of in the next few months.
Is there something wrong with the supply chain of eggs? Our local stores are rationing them.
There’s no shortage of eggs. These stories about “shortages” that don’t exist only serve to CAUSE shortages when people read them and think they need to hoard. If you are writing articles like this, you are part of the problem.
I’ve been wanting a chicken coop for years, love the idea
