The Reverend Raphael Warnock made history on Tuesday, defeating the incumbent Kelly Loeffler to become the first Black person elected a U.S. Senator from the state of Georgia.
The other Georgia race, between the Republican incumbent David Perdue and the Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff, remained too close to call on Wednesday morning, although Ossoff led Perdue by a slim margin that was expected to grow once the final absentee ballots were counted., the 51-year-old Warnock, a pastor at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, paid tribute to his elderly mother and the historic nature of her vote.
If both Warnock and Ossoff take their races, they will not only have flipped Georgia blue for the first time in decades—repeating the achievement of Joe Biden in the presidential race in November—but they would also give the Democratic Party control of both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives for the first time since 2010.
