Voting legislation that Democrats and civil rights leaders say is vital to protecting democracy collapsed when two senators refused to join their own party in changing Senate rules to overcome a Republican filibuster.

WASHINGTON — Voting legislation that Democrats and civil rights leaders say is vital to protecting democracy collapsed when two senators refused to join their own party in changing Senate rules to overcome a Republican filibuster after a raw, emotional debate.

Vice President Kamala Harris briefly presided over the Senate, able to break a tie in the 50-50 Senate if needed, but she left before the final vote. The rules change was rejected 52-48, with Manchin and Sinema joining the Republicans in opposition. Next, Schumer put forward a rules change for a “talking filibuster” on this one bill. It would require senators to stand at their desks and exhaust the debate before holding a simple majority vote, rather than the current practice that simply allows senators to privately signal their objections.

Manchin drew a roomful of senators for his own speech, upstaging the president’s news conference and defending the filibuster. He said changing to a majority-rule Senate would only add to the “dysfunction that is tearing this nation apart.” “We don’t need, we do not need a repeat of 2020 when by all accounts our last president, having lost the election, sought to change the results,” said Murkowski.

Why do Republicans want to make it harder to vote?

If your not a U.S. citizen u can’t vote. Simple

Why are 52 Senators so obedient to Republican leader McConnell? What are they afraid of? Maybe they need to keep a tight hold on power, control because they have secrets to protect? Why else would they vote against fair laws that weed out corruption, dark money?

UH HUMMMM INCASE YOU DID NOT KNOW THIS IS CALLED CORRUPTION HARD AT WORK

Dear oh Mitch McConnell playing dumb again. So, Trump's plan to have a few Republicans vote illegally in Democrat dominated districts, so that Republican controlled state legislatures can CANCEL that district's vote remains on track. VotingRightsForThePeople

Funny how The Tribune is steering clear of Biden’s disastrous press conference. The failed progressive movement is officially dead.

Show a proof of citizenship, get an ID card and you get to vote. If one can’t manage that easy process, they shouldn’t vote because they wouldn’t understand what they were voting for. Simple!

Senate Republican filibuster blocks Democrats' voting rights billVoting legislation that Democrats and civil rights groups argue is vital for protecting democracy has been blocked by a Republican filibuster. Yet it’s not racist to need ID to stand in line for 6 hours to get a forced Covid test. If needing ID to vote is racist, then it’s racist to rent an apartment or buy a home, racist to board an airplane, even every store isn’t he US is racist, ESPECIALLY if you need CIGGS or beer 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 The real question is why did Reps vote for these things just a few years ago and now -ZERO- support it now? And if you say it's a dem plot, you haven't read it or understand what was passed before.
