The word going around on social media comment threads is that the moose died during the recent cold snap that kept communities from Kenai to Fairbanks in a frigid grip. Temperatures in late January and the early days of February plunged the Talkeetna area toMickey Kenny, a teacher at Susitna Valley High School, captured the odd sight on camera on Monday and posted it online, thinking just a few friends would see it.
A photo shows a young moose that appears to have died while standing upright, on all four legs, in the woods near a clearing in Talkeetna.Kenny explained that he heard from a few reliable friends that the moose had died lying down near a walking trail, but had been dragged off further into the woods by humans, who he says must have stood it up near a tree.
A few inches of fresh snow had fallen on the moose carcass since it had been stood up, further giving it the look of a statue.
