Zoe, 16, lives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with her parents and sister. She describes stricter measures there for keeping people at home — and how those who disobey risk getting a ticket or being arrested. “It’s very intense,” she said. If the rest of the school year is canceled, she might not see one of her best friends, whose family is moving to another country. “My hope is that will clear up really, really soon, really, really fast by some miracle,” she says.
These days Carly Roitz, 23, rarely, if ever, leaves her Chicago condo; she has lupus, an autoimmune disorder, and is considered at higher risk. Recently graduated from Tulane University with a degree in public health, she and her fiancé are grateful they are able to work from home. They also are planning to marry in the fall and are wondering how the virus might affect those plans — though, given her education and health status, she knows that getting past this crisis is most important.
Also hunkered down with their families: Shiv Soin, a 19-year-old New York University student in New Jersey who is working with other young climate activists to turn planned Earth Day marches into a massive livestream event. Pablo Roa, a 24-year-old journalist in Mexico City, is particularly worried about his father, who is undergoing chemotherapy, and those in his country who have no choice but to work outside the home.
“Many greater countries have suffered this virus, so it would be really hard if we fall down because of it,” she says.Martha Irvine, an AP national writer and visual journalists, can be reached at mirvine@ap.org or at http://twitter.com/irvineap
Good on you Freddie.🤙
Good job young man👍. Way to step up, with that mind frame, I'm sure there is a fire department job in your future💯
The slogan really should be: Stay Home. Protect the NHS. Save your family. Because those that defy the rules for whatever reason are ultimately putting their own families lives at risk and effectively saying they don't care enough.
❤️
Beautiful!
Come on you Freddie .
Staying home is not hard. Your grandparents went off and fought in a world war for you. You’re being asked to sit on a couch and seem to be having trouble pulling it off.
Good grief. BackToWorkNOW
What if 'doing anything' means he and his family are thrown in the street and all the jobs his family could do no longer exist? That's what a 1930s style Depression will do, and that's exactly what we're headed for.
Smart young man. Take care, god bless.
This has to be extra tough on teens since they naturally want to get out and explore the world and connect with friends. Freddie is being a good son and brother, but I acknowledge it's tough.
Listen Up! Quick reminder that if the roles were reversed and young people were more likely to die, our parents and grandparents would do absolutely anything and everything to save us. Please stayhome.
Freddie! You are amazing! Thank you for sharing your story. I'm going to send this to my own 16yo. Take care and stay safe 💛 chicagostrong
Freddie is an awesome guy 💕
Freddie doesn’t have bills to pay.. so he can sit at home and have no worries
