Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan is expect to announce a resolution Tuesday urging the WNBA to bring a team to Oakland.

Oakland Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan is rallying for her city to be the home of the WNBA’s next franchise.

Kaplan believes Oakland is “ideally suited” for a team because of its existing basketball fanbase and current arena availability. She also mentioned that the city shares core values with the WNBA, arguably the most progressive sports league in North America. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert previously said she hoped to identify a city or two by the end of the year, with a goal of having a team up and running as soon as the 2024 season.

AASEG, a group of prominent local Black business leaders with a Black women-led ownership group that includes 16-year WNBA star Alana Beard, has been pushing since last October to bring a team to Oakland. The coalition has exclusive negotiating rights to purchase the City of Oakland’s half of the Coliseum complex, but doesn’t have prior experiencing owning and running a sports franchise.
